Hook Up Generation: Myth or reality?

Nowadays, finding a sex partner in an online dating site has become a natural thing to do.

Decades ago the thought of having premarital sex with a stranger was not seen as socially acceptable, but, in spite, today that taboo has almost disappeared, it seems that younger generations are not as promiscuous as they actually are portrayed, a recent study showed.

With the introduction of casual dating websites like C-date, and matchmaking apps like Tinder, has also appeared the social perception that Millennials, people born in the 90s, are like the “Hook Up Generation”, mostly looking for one-night stands, and casual sex.

The research conducted by P.h.D Ryne Sherman of Florida University, P.h.D Jean Twenge in San Diego State University, and P.h.D Brooke E. Wells of Widener University debunked the current theory about the unconstrained sexual habits of (in this case American) younger generations.

Millennials are not more promiscuous than its predecessors

Findings showed that, currently around half of the guys, and girls, aged 20 to 24 years, did not have a sexual partner until turning 18 compared to the 6% in the 1960s.

Despite, today is easier to find singles who want to have fun in good company, and enjoy no-strings attached relationships, it seems that issues like having more education, awareness of sexually transmitted diseases, easy access to pornography, and of course, more freedom to choose with who to get intimate with, have been decisive to change this generation’s sexual practices.

Millennial women are more sexually inactive than Generation Xer women

Differences between, and women still exist. As it happened with earlier generations, women born in the 90s still are more likely to be more sexually inactive than men.

However, there has been a huge transformation in the sexual behaviour of women in the past years, if we compare to previous generations.

In the 60s for example, only 2.3% of young adult women reported being sexually inactive, while nowadays the figure increases to 5.4%.

All in all, although there has been an immense transformation on the way how younger people casually date because they are more permissive towards premarital sex, hot encounters with strangers or even towards having friends with benefits, the idea that Millennials are the hook up generations is erroneous.
